Love Your Ladies: A Guide to Breast Self-Exams

Did you know that 40% of diagnosed breast cancers are detected by women who feel a lump during self-examination? This statistic alone highlights the importance of regular breast self-exams. Let’s dive into loving your ladies with self-exams and potentially saving your life!

The Mirror, Mirror Method

  1. Stand shirtless in front of a mirror with your arms at your sides.
  2. Look for any changes in size, shape, or symmetry of your breasts.
  3. Check for skin dimpling, puckering, or redness.
  4. Examine your nipples for any changes or inversion.
  5. Raise your arms high and repeat steps 2-4.

The Hands-On Approach

Standing Tall

– Use the pads of your three middle fingers to examine your breast in circular motions.

– Cover the entire area from your collarbone to your ribs, including the armpit.

– Apply varying pressure: light, medium, and firm.

– Feel for any lumps, thickening, or hardened knots.

Lying Down

– Lie on your back with a pillow under one shoulder.

– Place the arm on that side behind your head.

– Use the opposite hand to examine the breast and armpit.

– Switch sides and repeat the process.

Make The Most Of Your Self-Exams:

– Schedule your monthly exam 3-5 days after your period ends.

– If you’re postmenopausal, choose a consistent day each month.

– Familiarize yourself with your breasts’ normal look and feel.

– Report any changes or concerns to your healthcare provider promptly.

Remember, breast self-exams are just one part of a comprehensive breast health strategy. Regular clinical exams and mammograms are equally important for early detection.

By incorporating these simple steps into your routine, you’re taking a proactive approach to your breast health. Your future self will thank you for this act of self-love and care.
